Shutdown

This position normaly involves shutdown maintenance work in Coal, Iron Ore, metalliferous Mining, and Heavy Industrial Sectors. 

Driller

Driller is the person who is in responsible of the well drilling process on a rig. Driller supervises the crew and the running of the rig itself and is responsible for monitoring things like pressure build-ups and gas levels.

Driller offsider

Position involves helping to move, set-up and operate drilling rigs and secondary equipment to drill holes for mineral exploration and oil/gas exploration and production. 

nipper

Nipper’s primary roles are to work with the Underground Drillers and partake in ad hoc tasks such as delivery, pick up and transport of mining equipment and personnel within the underground mine.

Jumbo operator

Jumbo Operators are in charge of the operation of a single and /or double boom jumbodrilling rig for underground development mining with the installation of ground support.

Field assistant

Typical field assistant’s job roles involve operating 4WD vehicles to reach remote places, using a GPS navigational system to locate sites of interest, collecting soil samples, performing gridding, cleaning, preparing and rehabilitating mine sites, maintaining camps and vehicles.

Trades Assistant

A trades assistant in the mining sector is generally an entry level job, where the individual assists the tradesman and is expected to be a jack-of-all-trades.

Skilled or non-skilled labouring

Unskilled labouring generally refer to work that doesn’t require a certain set of skills or formal education. The main difference between unskilled and skilled labouring is the fact that skilled labours require specialised training whereas unskilled labours do not.

Maintenance

The mining industry requires a varied range of maintenance workers, such as electrical, mechanical, fixed and mobile plant maintenance, metal machining and welding.

Operator

Operators’s main roles typically invoive in carrying out activities from exploration to mine construction, operation and closure, trading of mining rights and many others. 

Site Supervisor / Foreman

Site supervisors is responsible to coordinate and supervise the activities related to mining and quarrying in underground and surface mines and quarries. They oversee the workers, schedules, processes and organisation in the mines and quarries.

Shot Firers

Shotfirers prepare, position and detonate explosives to demolish buildings and structures or dislodge rocks and soil. The work is predominantly outdoors and underground.

Underground

Underground mining is used to extract ore from below the surface of the earth safely, economically and with as little waste as possible.

Open Cut

Open-cut mining is used when the minerals are found over a large area and relatively close to the surface. The open cut mine is dug downwards in benches or steps which slope towards the centre of the pit.

Dump Truck

Dump Truck Operators are responsible for transporting materials such as dirt, rocks, sand, gravel, garbage and other materials from one site to another.

Mobile Plants

Mobile plant operators drive backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, front-end loaders, graders, scrapers, skid-steer loaders, rollers and forklift trucks to level, excavate, move and load earth, rock and other material.

Fixed Plant

Fixed plant operators are responsible in operating, carrying out routine inspections and maintaining the condition of the fixed plants.

 

Crane Operators

Crane operators are in charge of controlling mobile or stationary cranes to lift, move and place objects at locations such as building and construction sites, wharves and shipyards.

Exploration

Exploration geologists are responsible for finding minable occurrences of metallic ores, gems, pigments, industrial minerals, construction materials, or other minable commodities.

Mining (Surface & Underground)

Mining Geologists study the composition and structure of the earth to locate minerals and materials and advise on their extraction, and the environmental protection and rehabilitation of land after mining.

Resource

Resource Geologists are equipped with traditional technical skills such as structural geology, mapping (and the drawing of cross-sections, fence diagrams, stratigraphic columns and contours), mineralogy, and occasionally other disciplines such as palaeontology.
